i really havent heard the original but i dont think it follows the beat much and you are right about the trumpet. You should try playing around with the gain some more. This is my advice to you if it works great and if it doesnt oh well.

There's a few ways. Some people run MIDIs through a converter program, though that doesn't make completely authentic 8-bit tunes.
